TrAC apprentices integral to UBB's project.

Date : 2013-09-19

McGee Group Ltd, which is an integral part of the Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) supply chain, is "really benefiting" from supporting two General Construction Operative (GCO) Apprentices from TrAC who are helping them to deliver a major project at a new state-of-the-art waste treatment facility in Basildon.

Joe Bird (20) and Daniel May (18), were appointed by TrAC in April 2013 to support McGee on site whilst completing a Level 2 Framework in General Construction Operations with CITB at the National Construction College in Birmingham. They immediately started work on site whilst the development was in its very early stages and have been getting valuable hands-on experience under the close supervision and guidance of the McGee team. Over the last three months, the apprentices have experienced a wide range of different activities on site, in particular working extremely closely with the engineers, to support the installation of pre-cast concrete piles that will provide support for the main structure of the building complex.

Project Manager, Troy Robertson said "Both Joe and Dan have made a significant contribution to the operations on site and are now an integral part of the project in Basildon. McGee understands the challenge for young people and views the development of apprentices as part of its corporate social responsibility. We were very happy to be supporting our client in its objective to deliver apprenticeships through this project. However, we didn't fully recognise the business benefit that having these apprentices would bring. The contribution that they make to the project is significant and we have acknowledged this with a recent 88% increase to their rate of pay."

Assistant Site Manager, Chris Linfoot said "The guys are such an important part of our team here on site that we really miss their efforts when they go off to college on block release."
